What are teacher strikes really about? We need to discuss the wider context to understand why teachers feel the current situation is unsustainable.https://t.co/rkfrHcgKUp#strikes pic.twitter.com/3jFoYwgXVe

China Trip 2019

China Trip 2019

On Friday, 25th of October, 26 students and three members of staff embarked on a learning adventure, organised by our mandarin department, to explore the rich culture, ancient history and vast landscapes of China. Our tailored, action-packed itinerary centred around the two major cities of Beijing and Xi’an visiting

the country’s most iconic attractions such as the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City, the Wild Goose Pagoda, Temple of Heaven and the Terracotta Warriors, whilst experiencing and taking part in a variety of cultural activities. These included watching the famous Tang Dynasty Show in the Xi’an Opera House, a bike ride on the Ancient City Wall of Xi’an, a calligraphy workshop, watching a Kung Fu show and creating our own terracotta warriors which expanded our cultural awareness  and allowed us to gain an appreciation of China’s culture, art, architecture, history, geography and business. We were also fortunate to spend a day at our partner school in Beijing where we were partnered with Chinese students, participated in English lessons, practised calligraphy and shared our talents with each other. This included taking part in a Peking Opera performance as part of their Enrichment Programme and exploring the facilities of their Performing Arts Faculty. Our tour party received a warm welcome from all of the people and places we visited and were praised for displaying exceptional behaviour throughout.

Feedback from students, parents and carers have been overwhelmingly positive and speaks of a genuine sense of accomplishment, a new-found respect for China and hopes of visiting this extremely interesting country again in the future..

“It was fascinating being immersed in a completely different culture, and definitely worth going. I would definitely go again.” - Aisling, Year 11

“The China trip was a great experience, and allowed us to be immersed in Chinese culture. It was an opportunity to try authentic Chinese cuisine, visit many unique tourist attractions like bike riding along the Ancient Xi’an City Wall. It was also a chance to practise your Mandarin skills” – Alieka, Year 12

“I liked conquering the Great Wall of China because it is the main attraction of the country. I always thought I would never get to see the wall but now I have and it was an amazing experience.” – Ethan, Year 8
